Upgrading from Green To Gold Card?
I've been an Amex Green card holder since I got out of college a little over three years ago. I went with the Green card at the time because I wasn't sure if I would be able to get approved for Gold. I was wondering if I can have this card "Upgraded" to the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold card now, or if I will have to apply for this as a new card?

I believe they do offer the option to "upgrade," in that it will still be seen as the same account on your credit report.

Yes you can upgrade, I would call them at 1 800-528-4800 and press 0 three times to reach a live person right away.

Since you can upgrade I assume it is possible to downgrade as well?

I have upgraded before, you just have to call them. If you are upgrading from Green to Gold they should be able to do it without pulling your credit report again or anything like that. However I'm not sure how feasible upgrading from say Green to Blue Cash would be, at least with it still being reported as the same account.

James brings up a good point. Green is a charge card and Blue Cash is credit so they report differently to Experian, Equifax and Transunion. If this is the case I am sure they will probably pull your credit again and open it up under a new account - although you can get them to backdate it.

I agree with Kevin, time to upgrade.. you are losing rewards with the Green.

My husband upgraded his Gold to the Premier Rewards version awhile back and they did it right over the phone. It is seen as the same account on the credit report.Need a Card to Build/Rebuild Your Credit With? Read This >> Best Credit Cards For Building Your Credit
