American Express As My First Credit Card - Is It Possible?

It is possible to be approved for an American Express card if you have no other credit cards but a clear credit history? I do have a student credit card with a low limit but not sure if that really counts since it's only been open for three months. Should I attempt applying for an American Express card now BEFORE I accumulate a lot of accounts?

It is completely possible, but not likely - I've heard of people getting approved for Amex as their first card. However most people who are approved for Amex without having a previous card, established their credit through an auto, student or personal loan.

You could always go for the American Express PASS card.. technically it is an American Express card.

I was told by a personal banker the other day that getting declined when applying for a credit card, negatively impacts your credit score. If that's true, then you should clearly not try for an AMEX right now. Give your card now at least a year, and make sure you have a decent steady income before applying.

When you apply for a new card your score generally drops a bit because of the pull on your report, regardless of if you are approved or declined. I've never been declined *knock on wood* but whenever I've gotten approved for a new card I've found that my score bounces back after a few months.

I think it's important to be clear though that the drop is due to the pull on your credit report, not the bank declining your application.

Good question! I definitely like how you're thinking big. Hopefully you can get there--you'll have to let us know if you get approved. Read all these comments because it's good advice!

Got my first card nearly two decades ago and it was an Amex Gold. So definitely possible.

My first card was Amex blue (just the basic one not blue cash) and I've heard of n00bs getting approved for green as well.
