Starwood Preferred Guest Card Review: Know This Secret!

The Starwood Preferred Guest card has been one of the best travel rewards cards on the market for years and their rewards program, in existence for over 10 years, has won numerous awards. If you're wondering what all the hype is about and you're looking for a good hotel and frequent flyer card, here's why the Starwood card may be the best option for you.

    The Current Sign-Up Bonus

The Starwood Preferred Guest card has one of the best promotions going right now: sign up for the card and get up to 25,000 Starpoints and the annual fee waived for the first year. You earn the first 10,000 bonus points after your first purchase and get an additional 15,000 if you spend $5,000 during the first 6 months.

This bonus is enough for 6 nights free at a category 1 or 2 hotel!

    Understanding Starpoints

All purchases earn 1 Starpoint per dollar, but purchases at any of their properties will earn you between 4 and 5 Starpoints per dollar -- 2 points will come from the credit card itself and you'll earn an additional 2-3 points depending on your level. Starwood has more than 1,000 properties across the globe, including W Hotels, Sheraton and Four Points by Sheraton, Westin, Le Meridian and St. Regis.

Note: One of the most unique and positive features of the card is the ability to transfer your Starpoints to more than 30 airline frequent flyer programs with absolutely no penalties, fees or annoying surcharges.

Most transfers are 1:1, including transfers to American Airlines, Delta, British Airways, Hawaiian, US Airways, Air France, Alaska, Emirates, Japan, Virgin Atlantic, Jet Blue, Mexicana and more.

You also get a huge bonus of 5,000 points for every 20,000 points you transfer, which is pretty impressive considering most frequent flyer cards will only give you a 1:1 transfer, if you're lucky, without this 25% boost. This flexibility means you'll earn more miles using the Starwood Preferred Guest than you would with most airline brand cards.

Along with transferring points, you can also redeem them for hotel stays at Starwood properties and enjoy the following benefits:

    • No blackout dates or restrictions

    • Redeem points for free hotel stays or upgrades. An upgrade to a Specialty room is as little as 1,000 points or a Suite may be as little as 3,000 points.

    • You only need 2,000 points to earn a free weekend night at a Category 1 hotel or 3,000 points for a weekday night and higher level properties need a lower number of Starpoints compared to their normal price.

    • Cash & Points allows you to earn free rooms by using cash and Starpoints. A one-night stay at a Category 1 property may be 1,200 points plus $25, for example, instead of 3,000 points.

    • Get 5 nights for the cost of 4 by redeeming points for 5 consecutive nights in a Category 3-7 property and get your fifth night for free.

The Starwood Preferred Guest card is issued by American Express and comes with additional travel benefits, including Extended Warranty, Return Protection, Purchase Protection and a few types of travel insurance, such as travel accident insurance, car rental loss and damage insurance and emergency cash.

It's hard to find another credit card that gives you such a bang for your buck as an all-around versatile option for hotel and airline rewards. The card is a great value with an annual fee of only $65, well below most airline cards, with more than 30 partner airlines and that boost you receive whenever you transfer points to miles. Even without

I see you mention the 25,000 bonus point offer, any idea if the 30,000 offer is still active?

To follow up on this, looks like the 30k sign up bonus usually appears in the summer each year, last year it was in August. If they launch another 30k promo this year I will be applying and will post another update here.
