American Express Platinum Card Review and Complete List of Benefits
The American Express Platinum charge card comes with one of the highest annual fees in the industry and it's one of the most prestigious cards you can have in your wallet. It's definitely designed for big spenders, but is it really worth the fee? Here's an in-depth guide to the many benefits of the AmEx Platinum card and what you get for $450 a year to decide if this is really the card for you.
First, A Look At The Airline Benefits With American Express Platinum...
- First Class Airport Lounge Access
Enjoy unlimited first-class lounge access for yourself and two other people with complimentary internet, fax and telephones, luxury furnishings, complimentary refreshments and more. Unlimited access to first-class lounges typically costs hundreds each year and you get access to lounges around the world, including:
- Delta Sky Club
Priority Pass Select lounges, although guests do have an additional fee at US Airways Club,
American Airlines Admirals Club, and Alaska Airlines lounges.
- Companion Tickets on International Flights
If you book a business or first-class ticket on an international flight through American Express Travel Services, you'll receive a companion ticket. More than 20 airlines participate in the program, including Delta, Virgin Atlantic, Japan Airlines, Emirates, Air France and many others. You will only be responsible for any surcharges or taxes. This benefit can easily offer a savings of thousands, even if you only use it once.
- Global Entry Fee Rebate
The United States government charges a $100 fee for Global Entry, although American Express will automatically give you a $100 rebate if you use your Platinum card. Global Entry gives pre-approved, low-risk individuals quick entry into the country with no lines or paperwork, just a quick stop at a self-serve kiosk to confirm your identity. Once you're approved, Global Entry membership lasts for five years.
- $200 Airline Fee Credit
Receive up to $200 in airline fees reimbursed each year automatically once you select your favorite airline. Baggage fees, in-flight food and beverages, lounge day passes and flight change fees are all listed as covered expenses but many people report getting rebates on everything from airline gift cards and full lounge membership to cheap flights and award ticket fees! This is one of the greatest benefits from American Express and it's not hard to get the full $200 reimbursed every year if you travel fairly regularly.
- 25% Bonus with Pay with Points
If you redeem your points for airfare directly through American Express, you get a 25% bonus. Instead of the usual 1 point = 1 cent redemption rate, you'll get 1.25 cents for every 1 point you redeem. This means a $500 flight would cost only 40,000 points instead of 50,000 points and you can earn miles on Pay with Points purchases to save money on airline tickets while still earning elite status.
- Travel Accident Insurance
This is one of those benefits that you never want to use, but it's nice to have. Your American Express Platinum card comes with $100,000 in travel accident insurance, which covers you in case of accidental death or dismemberment on eligible common carriers.
- Baggage Insurance
Use your Platinum card to buy common carrier tickets and receive up to $1,250 coverage for lost, stolen and damaged carry-on bags and up to $500 for check bags. This coverage takes effect after the common carrier's liability, so if you lost $800 worth of belongings in a checked bag and the airline reimburses you only $300, American Express will cover the additional $500. This amount also includes up to $250 for high-risk belongings like computers and jewelry.
- Transferring Points to Frequent Flyer Programs
Another huge advantage to the Platinum card is the ability to transfer your Membership Rewards directly to more than 20 hotel and airlines loyalty programs, including Delta Skymiles, Virgin Atlantic and Virgin America, Best Western Rewards, Jet Blue, HHonors and many others.
Note: Your points will be converted 1 to 1 with most airlines and you can actually boost the value of your MR points by transferring to a program with a value of 2-3 cents per point when you redeem.
American Express Platinum Travel Benefits
- Hotel Upgrades and Perks
American Express has more than 700 hotel and resort partners through their Fine Hotels & Resorts program that's only available to Platinum and Centurion members. You can enjoy free room upgrades upon check-in, complimentary breakfast for two every day, late checkout, complimentary third day stays, free golf, spa or food credits and more, depending on the property. This benefit alone can be worth the annual cost of the Platinum card if you travel with a partner fairly often.
- Starwood Gold Status
Once you get your Platinum card, give Starwood a call and let them know you want Starwood Gold Status then just fax them proof to get your account upgraded. Starwood Gold typically takes 25 nights or 10 days to achieve and you'll get a 50% bonus on Starpoints, late checkout and room upgrades.
- No Foreign Transaction Fees
Most credit cards have a foreign transaction fee of 3-4% whenever you make a purchase outside of the United States. The American Express Platinum card has absolutely no foreign transaction fee, thanks to some changes they made to their program a few years ago. This can save hundreds or thousands every year, depending how often you travel abroad.
- Personal Concierge
Whether you want to make reservations for dinner, book travel or get help tracking something down, personal concierge is available at all times to offer assistance.
- Roadside Assistance
Skip AAA and receive up to 4 roadside assistance service calls every year with $50 in coverage every time in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada.
- Car Rental Collision Coverage
If you pay for your rental with your Platinum card, you can decline collision coverage and still be covered by American Express. This perk is especially nice in many countries with narrow roads although there are some countries that aren't covered.
- Premium Rental Program
Enjoy elite status with your Platinum card at National, Hertz and Avis for quick checkouts, upgrades and a four-hour return grace period. You also have the option to purchase premium insurance through American Express for around $20 per rental, which can be a big savings.
- Cruise Privileges Program
Here's a benefit that gets little attention: get up to $300 per stateroom shipboard credit or a 2-category stateroom upgrade, along with double MR points, exclusive amenities and a $100 annual travel benefit with your Platinum card. Their partners right now include Royal Caribbean, Princess, Regent Seven Seas, Celebrity, Holland, Cunard and many others.
And Finally... American Express Platinum Shopping Benefits
- Purchase Protection
If a purchase is accidentally damaged, stolen or lost within the first 90 days and you bought it with your Platinum card, your purchase is protected up to $10,000 per occurrence and up to $50,000 per calendar year. This benefit covers replacement, repair or reimbursement and it might just be one of your most-used perks.
- Return Protection
If you make a purchase with your Platinum card and the store won't accept your return for any reason, American Express will accept the return and reimburse you up to $300 per item and $1,000 per year within the first 90 days.
- Extended Warranties
There's no need to buy that extended warranty the clerk is trying to push on you; your American Express will automatically double the original U.S. warranty up to an additional year.
- Equinox Fitness
Sign up for a membership to Equinox gym with your charge card and get special pricing, four personal trainer sessions, and a 50-minute facial or massage.
The Platinum Rewards Program
Platinum and Centurion card members participate in American Express Membership Rewards First program, the highest level of awards offered by the issuer. Your MRF points can be redeemed for merchandise, travel, gift cards and more and you'll earn 1 point per dollar on everything with double points earned through the AmEx travel services site. The rewards program is a nice bonus to the Platinum card although most people find the host of benefits overshadow the rewards you earn.
American Express is also offering 25,000 bonus points if you spend $2,000 within your first 3 months, which is enough for a US domestic economy class round-trip ticket.
Is the American Express Platinum Right for You?
The benefits that can be valued -- such as lounge access, complimentary Priority Pass Select membership and $200 toward airline incidentals -- total about $700, far more than the card's annual fee.
This doesn't include other benefits that have no dollar value, or the rewards you'll earn. This card is designed for big spenders who travel abroad with its premium car rental program, Starwood Gold status and the rebate for Global Entry, among other things.
If you travel often, pay your balance in full every month and spend a few thousand a month, this is absolutely the card to have in your wallet and the privileges and benefits will quickly outweigh the cost. Their current sign-up bonus of 25,000 points is also hard to beat with an easy spending requirement and enough points to get a domestic economy class roundtrip ticket.Bad Credit?
