John Oliver Slams Credit Reporting Agencies for Errors

Did anyone besides me see John Oliver's latest HBO show where he takes the credit reporting agencies to task for rampant errors in their reports?

    It was awesome!

(And, FYI, I just switched cable providers, and am getting a free trial of HBO. I would not pay for it. But I'd be inconvenienced for a new install to get Game of Thrones!)

Great that this is getting some attention. But don't expect any easy solutions.

This is why you should take advantage of the free credit reports. Then you can contact the bureaus to remove old items.

I was surprised by how much stuff the credit bureaus fail to filter out when they are supposed to. Maybe they need a better algorithm.

This is why you can get your credit report from each of the bureaus for free 1x/year. It is your responsibility to do this, and write a letter. Don't rely on the credit bureaus or your creditors to be on top of this in a timely manner. They should be ... but no matter how great the software they use, it is still an overwhelming amount of information for them.

FYI, if you have an issue with your credit report, check out this article on How to Win a Credit Dispute. Or you might want to check out this article on DIY Credit Repair, if your issues go beyond mistakes in your credit report.

Both articles provides some nice tips, and even a sample dispute letters.

Kind of cool that someone is bringing attention to the fact the we, as consumers, need to pay attention to these things. Because no matter what the rules are, don't expect anyone to take care of your credit report for you.

A shame. But sometimes the truth hurts.
