Discover increasing late fees and returned payment fees

FYI community, Discover is increasing its late fee and returned payment fee to up to $37 as of July 1, 2016.

As of that date, the late fee will be no more than $15 for balances under $100, $27 for balances from $100-$250 and $37 for balances over $250.

So even better reason to avoid those late fees.

There is no excuse for making a late payment.

I totally agree. Set up auto-pay, if you are forgetful.

Does this mean Discover has done away with their late fee forgiveness program?

That is a great question, Arnold. I just check out the info for the Discover it card on Discover's website. And they still provide the following:

    • No late fee for your first late payment
    • Paying late won't raise your APR

They are just raising their fees to help further discourage those who habitually pay late from such irresponsible behavior. (And maybe to make an extra buck or two.)

Discover still is pro-consumer. But you also need to look after yourself: don't make late payments.

All of my bills are set up on some type of auto pay. I suggest everyone do the same.
