Questions about giving high schoolers prepaid debit cards

So I have two high school aged kids who are pretty responsible. Both have summer jobs lined up. But of course haven't gotten those first paychecks yet. So I was thinking of giving them prepaid debit cards to tide them over. This way they can have some means to pay for gas and whatever.

Are there any limitations on using prepaid debit cards that make this a bad idea? Are there places that don't take them?

And is there a better solution, other than just giving them cash?

Prepaid debit cards are pretty much accepted anywhere they accept Visa or MasterCard. So it should work out well.

But watch out for the fees! Some of these cards come with fees for each use and when you load them. So you may better off in that sense with cash, or using gift cards.

Maybe the best bet is to give them some cash to own a bank account. They can deposit paychecks into the account. And use a debit card from the account for their spending.

If the bank won't prevent them from over-drafting on the debit card, they can then learn the hard way about over-limit fees and keeping track of your spending.

I definitely vote for cash over prepaid cards and fees. But I'm cheap.

Frankly, it is my kids who are asking for the debit cards. I think they want to look like they have a credit card. But you're right. They all have costs, unless I get them a gift card.

Better to let them open a bank account, get direct deposit, and a real debit/ATM card. Time to start learning real responsibilities. And the debit card will give them the same "plastic" look.

    (As they say: kids today)

Be happy they are getting summer jobs.
